Imagine fulfilling your dream of encountering mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, even if mobility challenges seem insurmountable. Thanks to the dedicated local porters, this dream became a reality for one special visitor in our group.
Volcanoes National Park is renowned for its mountain gorillas, but the terrain can be daunting for some. For those unable to trek on foot, local porters provide a remarkable service: comfortable stretchers fitted with a soft mattress, pillow, and blanket. These baskets ensure comfort as they carry trekkers up the mountain to visit gorilla families located closer to the park's perimeter.
Upon arriving at the park headquarters and receiving a briefing, including essential guidelines such as wearing face masks, visitors opting for the stretcher service are settled into their baskets. With porters lifting and racing ahead, the group follows at a relaxed pace. When reaching the gorilla families, a guide briefs them on the rules and safety measures, ensuring an immersive and respectful encounter.
One of our group members, terminally ill but determined to meet the gorillas, found immense joy in this experience. She not only fulfilled her dream but repeated it twice during her trip, each time captivated by the gentle giants and the support of the porters. The hour spent with the gorillas, guided and assisted by the porters as needed, left a lasting impression of connection and awe.
